Charity Head Shave: AMTELCO’s Brad Swift Goes Bald for a Good Cause

McFarland, WI - November 2004 - On Saturday, October 23, 2004, Brad Swift, Amtelco Sales Representative went under the knife and shaved his beautiful head of thick hair in the name of finding a cure for breast cancer. Starting out as innocent dare by colleagues, the group raised $20,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

How It All Began
At the end of last year’s CAM-X (Canadian Call Management Association) convention, a group of 14 people were celebrating another successful event. Someone commented on the attention Brad Swift must pay to his beautiful head of hair, since it always looks so good. Brad was then challenged to a bet: in exchange for shaving his head the challenger would give him $1,000. Six more people immediately chimed in, and raised the stakes to $7,000 – all for one baldhead!

Luckily, a comment was made that $7,000 was a lot of money, and Brad should consider donating some to charity. Totally panic stricken by accepting the dare in the first place, Brad latched on to the charity angle as his lifeline to avoid “shaving head” while still “saving face.” Not wanting Brad to get out of it so easily, the group agreed that they would use his idea and raise a lot more money for a good cause. After some research, it was decided that breast cancer research was the charity of choice, and to maximize the effectiveness of the event it would be postponed until the next convention.

Two Heads Are Better Than One
Flash forward to the ATSI (Association of Teleservices International) convention in Vancouver, earlier this year. Brad French from Alliance Communications in Kingston, Ontario had heard about Brad Swift's charity dare and approached him. Brad French was impressed with the dare, and wanted to do more than pledge money. It was decided that he would also get his head shaved to raise additional funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Brad gladly accepted with the thought “Two heads are better than one.”
